rename it to favicon.ico
upload to your directory (if you have access). Some site builder applications also have a spot where you can just upload one.

I have a toolbar extension for firefox which lets me keep about fifty of them right on the browser, lot easier than using bookmarks. But if no picture, it looks like a file marker and I tend to forget about them. Makes navigation faster than using bookmarks, which I keep but have to remember to find them.

They are good to have, a lot of people use them for navigation and finding sites = small number of extra hits if you have a site that someone might want to come back to.

They just put the article rotation back into play, apparently its getting better seo results. Engines tend to think its fresh content if they haven't seen it for a while.
